There Might Already Be Plans For What Men Want 2 With Erykah Badu

What Men Want didnt win the box office this weekend and reviews for the film have only been middling. However, the movie brought in a healthy $19 million dollars on a reported $20 million budget and should start making money in the coming weeks in theaters. With that in mind, are director Adam Shankman and producer Will Packer interested in a sequel to the reenvisioned title? Adam Shankman told CinemaBlend he actually has an idea featuring Erykah Badus wild character, noting,

Theyre always like, Well, if it works maybe well do a sequel.' And Im like, what the sequel could be is Put it this way, Sisters involved.

Speaking with CinemaBlends Hannah Saulic, Adam Shankman revealed the studio is always looking for ways to continue stories through sequels. Well, that is if the original movie does well. While he wasnt a producer on the movie this time around, he did say in [his] head hes been mulling over a few things, including a sequel involving Sister.

Honestly, the tricky part is figuring out exactly what to make a sequel about in general. Will Packer also mentioned to us that he feels the real reason audiences invest in What Men Want is because of Taraji P. Hensons character, who sort-of spoiler ends up in a happy spot at the end of the movie. A sequel starring her character may not make as much sense as riffing off of Sister's character, especially since the gift is the focal point. Or, as Packer put it,

I dunno if you take this story, continue it. Some stories like lend themselves into [more]. I think you definitely are invested in her character but its so much about the conceit of the gift that she has.

In What Men Want, Erykah Badus character is a psychic and maybe drug dealer who gives Taraji P. Hensons Ali the tea that starts her on the long journey. Her tea doesn't cause the gift, but it does cause Ali to get pretty effed up to the point where she hits her head which then somehow magically yields her the gift. Sister later reveals to Ali that she tried the tea herself, but that it didn't work in the same way for her as it did for Ali. There's no reason that the mystical and weird Sister could not really be the conduit for other characters to receive the gift in a follow-up.

Hearing thoughts is a power that can be good and bad. It's a trope that has come up in other properties, from True Blood to Midnight, Texas. It will likely be a while before Paramount decided whether or not there's enough of a reason to bring back What Men Want for a second round, but we'll be sure to keep you posted either way. One Big Question About The OASIS We Wish Ready Player One Answered

Steven Spielberg is an unimpeachable legend of the science-fiction genre. The sheer awesomeness of Jurassic Park alone would make him a candidate for this stature, but then the man also has Close Encounters of The Third Kind, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Minority Report on his filmography. The man clearly knows how to weave a story with a futuristic/technological bent... but watching Ready Player One it's hard not to notice that he fails to do one thing that is really crucial to this kind of storytelling: he never actually gives audience a larger sense of the world in which the central narrative is taking place, or any idea of what normal life is like.

It should be recognized up-front that Ready Player One carries a whole ton of exposition in its first act -- so much so that it requires forced voiceover narration from Tye Sheridan's Wade Watts. There is a lot to quickly get across so that the audience can understand what's going on, from the history of James Halliday (Mark Rylance) and the OASIS, to the Easter egg hunt that has been in effect ever since Halliday's death. But when it comes to how all of this makes the movie's world different than our own, it falls short. Sure, Columbus, Ohio has become a hotspot in America, and that people of all ages are obsessed with the game, but the film lacks important context that is needed to give the story meaning and the protagonist depth.

Surprisingly, this issue could be identified as a problem born in the complications of adaptation, because all of these missing details are very much present in Ernest Cline's novel. While the movie version of Wade Watts is almost exclusively depicted as a "Gunter," using every waking moment searching for Halliday's three keys, the Ready Player One book offers much more to his everyday life. Instead of just having Sorrento casually mention that schools could be made to look like those in John Hughes movies, Wade actually attends classes; and he deals with personal complications like being so broke he can't actually travel off-world and explore the game like everyone else. Those elements are completely missing in the film, and they are problematic omissions.

The principal problem that emerges from the lack of world building is the fact that the setting of the Ready Player One movie feels entirely ordinary, and by extension doesn't really give the OASIS any kind of apparent significance. Sure, we're told that people go to school and work inside of the program, but it's the classic issue of telling instead of showing. With so much emphasis on Gunter activity and Planet Doom, there's very little in the movie that suggests it's the society-changing technology that it's supposed to be. Really, it just comes across as outrageously popular video game, which isn't really the point.

Not only is the OASIS diminished by the lacking background in Ready Player One, but Wade Watts is also severely undercut as a protagonist. As alluded to, the book paints the character as being incredibly poor, but able to succeed in the great Easter egg hunt because of his ingenuity and knowledge. The benefit of knowing who Wade is outside of the game gives us a reason to cheer him on as he's playing it. The movie basically removes half of this equation, though, and while you can still cheer on Wade because he clearly knows his stuff, his journey simply isn't as compelling because of the deleted conflict, and there's a degree of satisfaction removed from what he's ultimately able to accomplish.

Of all the various projects that DC is currently working on, none have raised quite as many eyebrows as the Joker origin story movie. The film is not connected to the current DC film universe and it's being described as a gritty and grounded take on the early days of the Clown Prince of Crime. It seems like a curious decision to be sure, but one prominent voice in pop culture has come to its defense. Kevin Smith thinks the studio is going about making the movie the right way. According to Smith...

I think what they're doing is smart. This is a cheap movie, it's $55 million. They're not spending --- $55 [million] for a comic book property? That's very inexpensive. They're going Logan model, which is keep it low-budget and make it more adult.

It's certainly true that $55 million for a comic book property is almost nothing. It's a fraction of what your average comic book movie would cost. From a studio standpoint, which is what Kevin Smith is specifically talking about here, he's not wrong. By only backrolling a fairly inexpensive movie, the studio isn't risking nearly as much. The Joker movie doesn't actually need to be the blockbuster success that every other comic book movie needs to be in order to be profitable.

The comparison to Logan might also be an apt one. That movie, all things considered, went light on the more traditional superhero elements of the X-Men movies, retractable claws notwithstanding, and was, by far, the most positively received in the franchise. Of course, that movie did have over a decade of history behind it, and while the Joker as a character has decades of history on the page and the screen, this particular story will be unconnected to all of it.

The movie may be much less of a risk than it might otherwise seem. Which is not to say it's not still a risk. Smith also says during his recent Hollywood Babble-On Podcast that, whether or not the new Joker movie, which will star Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role, turns out to be great, it's great to see Warner Bros. trying something new and different. Since a lot of people have taken issue with the recent run of DC movies, this project could end up being part of the solution.

They're experimenting. You gotta applaud 'em for this. Everyone's always shitting on Warner Bros. going, 'You're fucking up your movies!' And like, this is them trying a new direction where they're like, 'Look, obviously the extended universe stuff we're having a problem with. How about we just go back to the old way, which we used to do, where we just fuckin' take material, give it to a director, and say fuckin' go, and we don't worry about a fanbase and connecting the movies.

Just how good the new Joker movie will actually be remains to be seen, but certainly, we should all wait and see what happens before passing judgment. There's no reason the movie can't be good.
