The superhero genre has seen some pretty wild costumes and makeup effects over the years, with many of the most interesting of the bunch coming from the Guardians of the Galaxy corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One such actor who is largely covered with makeup is Dave Bautista, and the makeup for Drax the Destroyer is reportedly so elaborate that he has to sweat it off after a long day on set. While speaking about the Avengers: Infinity War costumes, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland explained:
Dave has to sit in a sauna after work to get that makeup off. He has to literally sweat it off. There's a sauna outside his trailer, like this little box he has to sit in.
So, while Dave Bautista doesn't have a particularly complicated costume (the lack of anything on his upper body likely helps), he does have to deal with some reasonably icky makeup. In fact, the entire top half of the actor's body is coated in makeup to help convincingly portray him as a badass alien warrior. That said, that makeup definitely seems to stay on, and Bautista apparently needs to end his work days in an on-set sauna to flush his pores and wash off the makeup so that he can turn back into a human. It's not as easy as pulling off a mask, although I'd assume there are worse ways to get makeup off.
Still, it also doesn't sound like this process is particularly glamorous. In fact, Dave Bautista has addressed this process before and gone into great detail on what the sauna scrub does to his body. By the time the process is over, his skin is apparently similar to hamburger, which doesn't sound all that pleasant.
Of course, Tom Holland is probably happy that his suit is apparently so much easier than Drax's makeup. In fact, elsewhere in Variety's conversations with the cast of Avengers: Infinity War, Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, summed up the efforts the Avengers actors put in nicely, noting,
I don't think any of them are very comfortable, but you know, you suffer for fashion, don't you?
Despite all of this, there are arguably more pressing concerns for some of these Marvel heroes than what they get to wear on a day-to-day basis. The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes absolutely chock full of shocking moments (not to mention a few hilarious moments, as well), and the buildup to the 10-year climax paved the way for a historic opening at the box office. Undoubtedly emboldened by this success, we will have to wait and see what other costumes Marvel will introduce in Avengers 4 when the fourth Avengers movie debuts on May 3, 2019.
