What Fan Service Means To Solo: A Star Wars Story's Lawrence Kasdan

There is no movie franchise quite as beloved as Star Wars. After the original trilogy changed the movie world forever, the property was passed down from generation to generation. With Disney now in possession of George Lucas' beloved universe, the House of Mouse has been putting out a ton of quality movies for the fans to feast upon. While some fans may are still recovering from Rian Johnson's subversive sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the franchise's second standalone movie has jut hit theaters. Solo: A Star Wars Story has a ton of emotional weight attached to it because of its focus on the franchise's original heroes, and it contains a ton of easter eggs and references to different parts of the galaxy far, far away. While some critics find these moments to be distracting "fan service", Solo writer Lawrence Kasdan recently opened up about that new controversial term. He said,

I didn't even know the phrase 'fan service' until a few years ago. But for me, that only meant, always, that there was a tradition here...I don't think of those things as, 'Oh, we're going to hit that button or ring that bell.' I think of it in terms of, 'In this long story, there are elements that keep rearing their heads,' and those are very comforting. They're fun, you know, they give you this feeling of familiarity that is good.

It seems that the Kasdan brothers aren't particularly thrilled with the concept of fan service, especially in an iconic, expansive property like Star Wars. Utilizing the characters and settings of the universe shouldn't necessarily be seen as a bad thing; they're just using all the colors in the Star Wars crayon box.

Lawrence Kasdan's comments no doubt comes from personal experience, as fan service is a concept that he and brother/co-writer Jon had to mull over when crafting the story of Solo. Because the movie is set in between the prequels and A New Hope, the doors were open to include characters and references to both trilogies. And the standalone movie did just that. Surprise characters popped up, there were tons of passing references, and the fans got to see the origin of Han Solo and Chewie, their relationship with Lando, and his acquisition of the iconic Millennium Flacon.

In the same conversation with ET, Jon Kasdan spoke to the dichotomy of wanting to include as much quality Star Wars content as you can, while also keeping it simple and servicing a greater story.

I think there's certain things you sort of want to see and you're sort of wrestling between two opposing poles. You don't want to do exactly what's expected, and we are aware of voices that are saying, 'Why does this movie exist?' and 'We don't need a lot of fan service.' At the same time, I think there's a deeper and more sort of primal impulse, larger audience that really does want to see how Chewie and Han met and what circumstance that was and what the first sort of interaction with the Falcon was like.

With Solo: A Star Wars Story now officially in theaters, it looks like Disney is going to have yet another major payday on their hands. Early reception for the standalone film has been positive, as its a welcomed moment of levity after The Last Jedi's extremely high stakes.

Two New Characters Revealed In The Frozen 2 Trailer

The first Frozen 2 trailer just came out, and in addition to some major snowflake clues, it appears we've also just met some new characters. At the very least, we got a good look at the new girl. The other character is more ... up in the air:

I'm not thinking it's Anna and Kristoff's kids, although anything is possible. There may be a reason for the close resemblance, though. At first glimpse, I thought maybe that girl was Princess Anna in new clothes. But no, that's someone else. Also, the boy flying up into the air -- at first I thought it was Kristoff, but no. This person is smaller.

Could it be a flashback to Anna and Elsa's parents? Maybe their mom had a wind/autumn power, the way Elsa has a frozen power? It feels like Frozen 2 has some unfinished business with the parents' story.

We do know at least two new characters are coming, and Kristen Bell (Anna) previously told CinemaBlend we'll be big fans:

One thing I will say, there are a couple new characters that you will fall in love with. That thing I feel like I can say safely.

Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) were cast to voice two new characters. Not saying those two characters were shown in this first trailer, but the stars will be playing new characters in Frozen 2, so expect to see and hear more about them. It wouldn't be surprising to meet other new characters as well.

That little autumn scene may fit with the theory about Frozen 2's snowflake poster representing the four seasons, with three other people having powers like Elsa's power of ice. She would basically represent winter -- with summer, spring, and fall represented by others.

Could this new character here be the autumn version of Elsa? It's too soon to say, since we're all still in speculation mode until Disney fills us in.

Some fans are already wondering if this new girl could be a love interest for Elsa, although it would be strange for her to date someone who looks so similar to her sister, no? There's been no confirmation on the Elsa girlfriend front, so we'll have to stay tuned to see what Disney decides to do.

Frozen 2 has yet to release an official synopsis, and the first teaser trailer was heavy on the tease. We don't even hear any characters' voices, we just hear the intense music and watch some darker-than-expected visuals. The whole thing ends with Anna drawing Kristoff's sword and slicing at something. It's getting real out there!

Clearly, Frozen 2 will be sending Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), Olaf (Josh Gad), and Sven on a grand adventure, taking them into new lands, and possibly through other seasons. It's officially Christmastime, which means Love Actually is definitely playing right now on someone's screen. Keira Knightley was literally deemed "perfect" as Juliet, but the actress herself was feeling very flawed during shooting. As a teen, she had typical acne issues -- hence the hat, which wasn't a trendy fashion choice. Let Knightley explain:

Do you know why the hat was there? I had a massive spot in the middle of my forehead. This is the problem with being 17 and being in films. I mean, it was humongous, so there was no choice but we had to find a hat to cover it 'cause there was no lighting, there was no makeup that was going to cover it.

That is kind of hilarious. Is it surprising to anyone else that she was only 17 when she filmed this movie? It's weird when you think about her character getting married at the start of the film. But considering she carried the name Juliet -- of Shakespearean fame -- and was adored/stalked by her husband's best friend, it's humanizing to think of the very normal girl behind that worship.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms star shared her story with BBC Radio 1 (via ET), laughing at how different her memories are vs. what the fans think about when they watch the film:

See, and that's the thing I really remember because again, it's funny how you remember extreme embarrassment, isn't it? I remember like coming in in the morning and being like, 'Ah! Oh wow, I've got another head on my head! What are we going to do? There's nothing we can do about this.' But there is because you can always put a hat over it. But, you know, I was actually very grateful for that hat. I have a lifetime of gratitude for that hat.

And now we have a new appreciation for that hat. Love Actually is considered one of the best romantic comedies of all time, but it's amazing how much angst was going on behind-the-scenes.
