Jake Gyllenhaal Goes Crazy For Killer Artwork In Velvet Buzzsaw Trailer

The last time Jake Gyllenhaal teamed up with director Dan Gilroy, they made 2014's Nightcrawler, which offered up a creepy tale about sleazy journalism and the exploitative nature of media driven by money. For their next pairing, Jake Gyllenhaal and Dan Gilroy are taking on the art world in Velvet Buzzsaw. Take a look at the film's trailer below to see Jake Gyllenhaal going crazy for what proves to be some truly killer artwork.

You have to love when a trailer zigs when you think it's going to zag. What could have been a satirical look at the art world with a group of greedy characters concocting an elaborate lie to make money quickly turns into a story about killer paintings. The trailer for Velvet Buzzsaw goes from Exit Through the Gift Shop to a horror movie in a hurry.

Jake Gyllenhaal's character seems to relish criticizing people's art, and in so doing denying their art the perceived value that his praise would bring. He is surrounded by people who value not the meaning of art or its purpose, but the status it confers upon them and how it can enrich them monetarily. They then find out that some art has real power and a trail of blood will leave no ambiguity about what this artist's intention was.

What's brilliant about this trailer is that Velvet Buzzsaw seems to offer plenty of satire and humor to go along with the horror. The horror genre is great for satire and this trailer delivers some hilarious horrific moments, like when Jake Gyllenhaal's art critic who, as if to lean into the absurdity and pretension of the art world, is named Morf Vandewalt, shouts "Something truly goddamn strange is going on!"

The end is also hilarious and a scathing critique of the superficiality at play as someone's death is perceived as an art exhibit, and is photographed and uploaded to the point that it is trending. The horror on display is also wild and weird, and it looks like Velvet Buzzsaw will have no shortage of jump moments.

This film looks like a rioutous ride and the actors in this trailer all seem to be having a ton of fun with their absurd characters. Rene Russo looks deliciously diabolical, as her character seems to orchestrate the fraud surrounding the paintings. Jake Gyllenhaal also looks hilarious as the smug art critic who completely loses it over these killer paintings. And Toni Collette, coming off her brilliant turn in last year's Hereditary, is always a welcome presence.

What's especially appealing about this trailer is how unique it looks, both in story and tone. We've seen horror set in the worlds of dance (Black Swan) and fashion (The Neon Demon), but the art world is less traveled ground, and unlike many of the films in the horror renaissance, Velvet Buzzsaw appears to have a more playful tone with the satire and the scares going hand in hand. And judging by Dan Gilroy's work in Nightcrawler, this film will also have plenty to say.

New Disney Parks Footage Gives Us Our First Look At Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

We're still at least a year away from the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the new land that will debut at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, however, a new video gives us our best look yet at the new planet of Batuu. The video flies over the construction of the new theme park space, showing off what's been done as well as the construction that's currently ongoing. Check out Galaxy's Edge in the video below.

If you find yourself at Disneyland or at Disney's Hollywood Studios, the two parks where construction is currently underway on the new Star Wars land, you'll meet some pretty big walls between you and where the planet of Batuu is being built. This makes this video the best look that we've yet had at the actual space. While most of what we're looking at can't really be distinguished, it is clear which parts of the land will be "natural," mountains, etc, and which parts will be structures of some kind, which will house the attractions, shops, and restaurants. At the end, the camera pulls back and is replaced by the concept art of the land that has been previously revealed, giving us an idea of how the land will fit together.

Considering the sheer size of the space, this is the largest single construction a Disney park has ever undertaken, one wonders if all this can really be done in a year. The exact opening dates of the two spaces have not been announced, so an opening at the end of 2019 is as likely as the beginning. We do know that Disneyland will see its Galaxy's Edge open first. I would guess they're eyeing a spring 2019 opening for that, in order to capture the summer vacation crowd. If so, that gives them just over a year to be ready.

One thing that we do see clearly is the collection of peaks that will surround the planet of Batuu. These are the Black Spires, which lend their name to a few locations within the new land.

Galaxy's Edge promises to be a unique place within the Disney Parks. While all of the lands in the theme parks would be considered immersive, Galaxy's Edge takes it all to another level. The land has been created to reflect a new planet within the Star Wars Galaxy, Batuu, and everything about the space will reinforce the idea that you're on an alien world. You won't even be able to purchase Star Wars branded merchandise within the land because doing so wouldn't fit with the illusion that you're on another world.

I certainly can't wait to travel to Batuu myself, though, one expects the I'm not the only one. Be ready to deal with some massive crowds when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens at Disneyland and Walt Disney World next year.

Hugh Jackman Sent A Cute Message To School Kids Who Were Performing The Greatest Showman

Sometimes you can predict ahead of time if a movie is going to perform well in theaters, and other times there are movies that manage to completely surprise critically and/or commercially. One of the latter from last year's theatrical offerings was The Greatest Showman, which saw Hugh Jackman playing P.T. Barnum in a musical adaptation of Barnum forming his famed circus. In the six months since The Greatest Showman's release, it's built up an impressive fanbase, so much so that students at the Mitton Manor Primary School in Glasgow, Scotland recently performed some of the movie's tunes on stage, and Jackman sent a special message wishing them good luck.

Rather than perform the entire Greatest Showman story, the Mitton Manor students sang a few songs from the blockbuster musical, and according to BBC, there was an emphasis on "This is Me," arguably the biggest song from the movie. Ahead of the performance, the teachers decided to tweet Hugh Jackman to see if they could get his attention. Eventually they were successful, and while the actor was unable to see the children perform in person, he did shoot the above video to offer his support and give some valuable words of wisdom from The Greatest Showman. Judging by the accompanying response, it sounds like Jackman will get to see soon enough how the little ones did in front of their school assembly.

Having been in development for nearly a decade, The Greatest Showman finally opened to the masses last December, with Hugh Jackman's co-stars including Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson. While the movie earned a mixed critical reception, commercially it's performed excellently, making $433 million worldwide off an $84 million budget. The Greatest Showman subsequently earned numerous accolades, which included "This is Me" winning a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture and being nominated for an Academy Award. While such a movie isn't prime material for earning a sequel, there has been talk recently about the potential for The Greatest Showman becoming a Broadway musical. If that happens, given Jackman's stage background and assuming he doesn't have any movies to work on, I wouldn't be surprised if he reprised P.T. Barnum for some of the opening stage performances.

You can now watch The Greatest Showman in the comfort of your own home on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. Hugh Jackman can next be seen U.S. Senator Gary Hart in The Front Runner, and he's also being eyed for a role in Bad Education.
