Michael B. Jordan Addresses Black Panther 2 Concerns
How do you top the U.S.'s top-grossing movie of 2018? Black Panther made even more money than Avengers: Infinity War at the domestic box office, and also became the first superhero movie ever nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Ryan Coogler's movie just won the top honor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where T'Challa himself Chadwick Boseman made a beautiful speech. Also at the SAG Awards, Killmonger villain Michael B. Jordan addressed the follow-up pressure for Black Panther 2.
Sequels, I think, are one of the hardest films to make, and I feel like to create a world and build upon it thats so beautifully and delicately woven into the world of the Marvel Universe but throughout cinema in general, you take Marvel out of it, I think its a movie that stands against all film across the board. So yeah, I think if there was an opportunity, I think everybody would be pretty excited to come back around.
Michael B. Jordan addressed reporters (via Variety) with his comments on Black Panther 2, with the rest of the Black Panther cast around him. He said, speaking for everyone up there, if there was an opportunity to come back and so a second film, it would be a tremendous accomplishment.
Marvel is reportedly in development on Black Panther 2, with Ryan Coogler set to return to write and direct. So there's more than just an opportunity to continue the world of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's Black Panther.
Michael B. Jordan tried to speak for the Black Panther cast, but also take himself out of it personally, probably because 1) he's not Ryan Coogler, 2) he's not T'Challa, and 3) his character Erik Killmonger supposedly died in the first movie. But if Steve Trevor can come back after Wonder Woman, there's gotta be a way to get Killmonger back too.
Speaking of that -- also at the SAG Awards, Angela Bassett's (Ramonda) husband, actor Courtney B. Vance, may have spoiled that Michael B. Jordan will indeed return in Black Panther 2, along with the rest of the cast.
Of course, anything that happens with Black Panther 2 would have to be explained via this April's Avengers: Endgame, since so many characters were snapped through Thanos' 50% Decimation. Marvel Studios has yet to announce a release date for Black Panther 2, but it's possible it will take that cushy spot in 2020.
For now, fans can expect to see the Black Panther cast back at the 91st Academy Awards on February 24 on ABC. Black Panther is nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. The film made $1,346,913,161 worldwide, second only to Avengers: Infinity War, but earned the top domestic box office gross with $700,059,566.
