We Actually Have A Box Office Horse Race At Movie Theaters This Weekend

Normally, the weekly box office results are a foregone conclusion. There's usually only one major film release on any given weekend, perhaps with a couple of smaller entries, and those who estimate what the numbers will look like have gotten pretty good at being right. However, for the first time in a long time we're going to have a real race for the number one spot at the box office this weekend as three films vie for the top spot, and all three are predicted to do about the same amount of business.

This weekend sees Happy Death Day 2U, Isn't it Romantic and Alita: Battle Angel all opening in theaters. HDD technically opened yesterday and the other two open today and with Monday being the Presidents' Day holiday, it's essentially a five-day weekend at the box office. What makes this holiday weekend especially interesting, however, is that there is no clear front runner. All three films are looking at totals estimated to be between $20 and $25 million.

According to Box Office Pro, Happy Death Day 2U is expected to be the winner, with estimates putting the film at $25 million. Alita: Battle Angel is looking at $22 million and Isn't it Romantic is looking at third place with about $20 million. But those numbers are so close together that it's really anybody's game.

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part was expected to clear $50 million last weekend and it only brought in about $35 million so if any of these three movies even slightly underperforms, or overperforms, compared to the expectations we could see a very different result.

It's unusual to have this sort of a close race when it comes to the box office. Normally, the studios stake out the weekends well in advance and once one major film gets set, the rest steer clear in order to actively avoid the competition. Alita: Battle Angel feels like the movie that was trying to be the blockbuster release for this weekend. However, since the film is based on an anime that the broader audience isn't all that familiar with, it's not expected to do the same sorts of numbers that other action tentpoles might do.

While there will be natural competition between the three movies for the consumer's dollar, each has the benefit of playing to a different audience. Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel to a popular horror movie. Alita: Battle Angel will scratch the itch for the action fan, and Isn't it Romantic is a romantic comedy.

The fact that today is Valentine's Day might help out Isn't it Romantic. If there's a movie that might exceed current projections, that might very well be the one.

However the box office turns out, it will likely be close. Isn't it Romantic and Happy Death Day 2U are likely excited by the potential numbers, as both films were relatively cheap to produce, so a $20 million weekend is just fine. For Alita: Battle Angel and its reported $170 million budget, it will need to exceed its projections by quite a bit to have a weekend considered to be successful, though the movie might do much better with international audiences.

Zack Snyder Reveals Who Was Going To Play Darkseid In The DCEU

As time goes on, Zack Snyders original vision for Justice League seems to get clearer with each passing revelation. Theres been quite a bit of information thats come out about what was supposed to happen in the film that eventually became the final product released, and a lot of that information was about potential franchise villain Darkseid. Weve learned so much about this character, from what his function would have been in the Justice League films to what he would have looked like; and now, we know who would have played him - actor Ray Porter.

Best known for supporting roles in shows like ER and Justified, Porter was going to play the Justice League baddie who was supposed to raise hell towards the end of the first planned film, only to come back in the planned Justice League 2 later. Zack Snyder confirmed this casting through social media, as he posted a photo of Ray Porter, along with captions merely stating, Hes the man. For Darkseid.

If the DCEU had stuck to its originally intended path, Darkseid was basically the Thanos of the Justice League story run, as he was searching for an equation that would allow him to control all sentient beings. References were baked in throughout the series of films contemporary to Justice League, with lines and renderings of Darkseids visage that have been pointed out by Zack Snyder through his official Vero account. Ray Porter being drafted into the Justice League mix as the actor who would be his cinematic avatar only further confirms that not only was the two film structure scrapped pretty quickly, but the Snyder Cut just might be out there. Though it may surprise people that Porters long-locked look would be chosen for a character that typically is seen with a helmet covering a bald head, Justice League probably would have used some sort of motion capture process to bring the character to life. So Ray Porter could have put on the standard bodysuit with ping pong balls or whatever rig that Zack Snyder would have used to get the look right, and that hair could have been secured and eliminated from the film. Though that hasnt stopped people from joking about the character taking a rather Aquaman-like approach to his looks, despite the fact that Darkseid is some serious business in the DCEU.

A formidable villain in the DC Comics universe, Darkseid was someone that was being talked about quite heavily ever since the initial clues were placed within Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. With Bruce Wayne dreaming of a nightmarish apocalyptic future, and a massive field with the Omega symbol burned into it, the pump was primed for this villains eventual usage towards the end of Justice Leagues first part and his eventual full-on baddie status in Justice League 2.

With a fandom further calling for the release of the fabled Snyder Cut, further drips and drabs of information towards the original vision for Justice Leagues defunct two-parter seem to only stoke those fires. Whether well get that cut and what further information will come out about the original two part structure of the Justice League film in the future is something thats open ended, but intensely intriguing.

However, as it stands, Justice Leagues final cut is on home video at the moment, with Shazam! being the current DC Comics film in theaters. Though for the record, Ray Porter would make a hell of a relative for Jason Momoas Aquaman, should the DCEU want to retain him.

Nothing in recent filmmaking became quite as notorious as Henry Cavill's facial hair. A lot was written about the infamous mustache, and now, this may be the last thing we write, because it is gone. Henry Cavill has announced that the most derided mustache in the history of cinema is no more, and while many may have nothing but bad feelings attached to it, Cavill has posted a heartfelt and touching tribute to the now departed soup strainer. For anybody who's ever had facial hair for a long time, saying goodbye to it can certainly be an emotional experience. It's a part of you for so long, and then it's gone. This was apparently what Henry Cavill is talking about when he says he has trouble recognizing himself in the mirror. It's possible that nobody will be able to recognize the actor on the street considering how important his mustache became. The video closes with a tearjerking musical tribute that says a final goodbye to the facial hair, which has been shaved but is not forgotten.

Henry Cavill is having a bit of fun, but it actually can't be overstated just what a big deal this mustache actually was. Cavill was contractually obligated to grow it as part of his role in the upcoming Mission: Impossible Fallout, which was fine, until he was needed for the Joss Whedon helmed reshoots for Justice League. This required Warner Bros. to use CGI to remove the facial hair from the frame, and with the limited amount of time available, the job was only marginally successful. Superman looks a little...off a lot of the time thanks to the CGI job, which doesn't help the film in any way. Regardless of how you feel about the movie as a while, there's little argument that the CGI hair removal makes Cavill look wrong.

The fact that Henry Cavill had to keep the mustache longer than planned didn't help matters. Tom Cruise broke an ankle on the set of Mission: Impossible Fallout, delaying production by several weeks. However, now the movie is done and that means the mustache can finally go. Cavill now looks like the actor that the rest of would recognize, though it should be said that, the mustache works. Cavill looks pretty good with or without it, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the facial return for some future role. Although, considering what this last mustache went through, Cavill himself may not be so interested in returning to it. We'll be able to revisit the mustache when Mission: Impossible Fallout hits theaters in July.
