Rogue Ones Original Opening Crawl Had A Cool Connection To Star Wars: A New Hope

Rogue Ones Original Opening Crawl Had A Cool Connection To Star Wars: A New Hope

The Star Wars franchise is slowly but surely figuring out its standalone movie format, which included decisions like omitting the traditional opening exposition crawl from Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. However, the film actually did feature a crawl at one point. In fact, not only did Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have an opening crawl, but screenwriter Gary Whitta recently took to social media and revealed that his crawl specifically had the exact same number of words as A New Hope's crawl. Whitta wrote:

I did write a crawl, and I remember thinking it was neat that it was the same number of words as the one in A New Hope. This was before the (correct) decision not to have opening crawls for the standalones.

It's the little details like that that make the Star Wars franchise so interesting. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had a crawl in the earliest stages of the script's development, and per Gary Whitta' recent tweet, we now know that it would've been structurally identical to that of A New Hope's opening crawl by featuring 83 words.

In the end, the decision was made to move away from the traditional opening craw that has become so iconic in the main saga film. This helped give Rogue One: A Star Wars Story its own flavor compared to movies like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and Gary Whitta now believes that the decision to omit the opening crawl turned out to be the right one in the end.

This decision makes sense, as there's a case to be made that Rogue One never needed a crawl in the first place. It's one of the only Star Wars movies to feature a substantial time jump, with the opening movie serving as a prologue to set up the Jyn Erso Death Star story. In essence, that sequence where Saw Gerrera finds her IS the opening crawl.

That said, the Star Wars franchise is still learning how to structure its spinoff properties, as Solo: A Star Wars Story did something decidedly different from Rogue One. Instead of opening straight into the action, Ron Howard' recent Han Solo-focused prequel featured a much briefer opening text that simply faded in to get audiences up-to-speed on Han's life on Corellia. With other spinoff films currently in development at Disney and Lucasfilm, it will be worth keeping an eye out to see how the franchise changes its structure and moves in new directions.

It will be interesting to see how the Star Wars franchise evolves its format at Lucasfilm becomes more comfortable with the spinoff movies. Until then, make sure to watch out for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX (which will almost certainly have a crawl) next year on December 20, 2019!

Teen Titans GO! To The Movies Can't Stop Teasing Deadpool

Deadpool was already a Marvel Comics fan favorite for years before his solo movie debuted, but thanks to Ryan Reynolds' portrayal, the Merc with the Mouth's popularity has significantly increased over the last few years. Meanwhile, over at DC Comics, there's a character who looks an awful lot like Deadpool, though their personalities couldn't be any more different: Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke. While Slade has clashed with numerous DC heroes over the years, he's arguably best known for being a Teen Titans villain, and with him serving as the main villain in Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, the marketing for the movie has been poking fun at his similarities to Deadpool, most recently with a text message conversation, as seen below.

Here's a little background for those of you unfamiliar with comic book history. Deathstroke was introduced in 1980, and 11 years later, Deadpool was designed to resemble Deathstroke. He was even given a similar name: Wade Wilson. Since then, Deadpool has carved out his own path with his fourth wall-breaking antics, but Teen Titans GO! To the Movies can't help but reference him in relation to Deathstroke, who's known simply as Slade in this movie. In the trailer that premiered last month, we saw Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg immediately assumed it was Deadpool they were dealing with, prompting Slade to wisely point out that he was the one who came out first.

Unfortunately for Slade, it's in one ear and out the other with the Teen Titans, or maybe they're just trolling him in the above text message conversation from Twitter. Regardless, Slade isn't going to get any respect from these young'uns. But while the animated version of Deathstroke suffers through these Deadpool jabs, Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke from the DC Extended Universe has his own movie in development, so it isn't all bad news for the character. As for Deadpool, his sequel adventure came out a few weeks ago and has performed incredibly critically and commercially. Just don't expect this R-rated version of the character to ever pop up in an all-ages animated movie... ever.

Keeping the comedic tone seen in the Teen Titans GO! TV series, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies sees Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg setting out to find a director for their movie. Upon learning that no one takes them seriously, the team of young heroes uses their conflict with Slade as an opportunity to prove that they're worthy of a movie. Along with the main voice cast from the TV series reprising their respective roles, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies' cast includes Will Arnett as Slade, Kristen Bell as Jade Wilson, Nicolas Cage as Superman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, Halsey as Wonder Woman and Lil Yachty as Green Lantern.

Teen Titans GO! To the Movies opens in theaters on July 27. As for what else is hitting the silver screen later this year, head to our 2018 release schedule for that information.

Kevin Feige Explains Whats Happening With The Skrulls After Captain Marvel

Kevin Feige Explains Whats Happening With The Skrulls After Captain Marvel

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for Captain Marvel. If you have not yet seen the film, read on at your own risk!

There are many surprises featured within the runtime of Anna Boden and Ryan Flecks Captain Marvel, but there is nothing more shocking than the turn that the film makes with the Skrulls. Given the history of the shapeshifting aliens in the pages of Marvel Comics, it was widely assumed going in that they would be the antagonists of the new blockbuster, but everything changes about half way through the film when its revealed that Ben Mendelsohns Talos and his compatriots are seeking home and security not invasion and war.

Because of this significant move, there has been a lot of exciting chatter about what the future may hold for the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, does this mean that all Skrulls are good, and simply at the mercy of the all-powerful Kree? Fortunately, I recently had the chance to discuss that topic with the man who holds all of the answers: Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

I sat down with the filmmaker/executive one-on-one during the Los Angeles press day for Captain Marvel, and I wasted zero time diving into spoiler territory and asking about the role of the Skrulls in the film as my first question. Acknowledging that the green, pointy-eared extraterrestrials have basically always been bad guys in the comics, I inquired about how the movie chose to approach them. Feige explained that it was a concept that was developed early in the creative process with the intention of fans who think they have everything figured out even before theyve sat down to watch the film. He explained,

I think subverting expectations is always fun, and I think breathing reality and life and emotion and pathos into characters you wouldn't expect to have those attributes is also fun, and a good way of storytelling... I think '90s and Fury, of course, Carol Danvers, of course the Kelly Sue [DeConnick] run, and Goose, sort of came together, and then the notion of [good Skrulls]. Because this whole movie is about who can be a hero. Who should be a hero? What does a hero look like? What does it mean to be a hero? And it felt like additive to that theme to do what we did with Talos. And Ben Mendelsohn's the greatest.

In Captain Marvel, the Skrulls definitely do appear to be the villains for the first half of the story ambushing and capturing Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) during a Starforce mission, and then chasing her to Earth after her escape. She eventually learns the truth about Talos and his crew, however, understanding that they used to work directly with Mar-Vell (Annette Bening), a Kree living on Earth developing a light speed engine with the hope of helping the Skrulls establish a new homeworld. After that point, the objective totally changes for the heroine, and Carol finds herself teaming with the shapeshifters and on a quest to end an intergalactic war.

As noted by Kevin Feige, the change-up works because you never see Good Skrulls coming, but on a larger level it was also stressed that a big part of the move was disrupting generalization and absolutes. Part of any conflict is the fact that there are shades of grey, and there are always going to be members of opposing forces with philosophies and ideologies that both compare and contrast in surprising ways. The presence of the Skrulls in Captain Marvel is a perfect example, as while Talos and his crew are just looking for safety, Feige also explained there are plenty out there that dont have the same kind of peaceful intentions and goals:

People have asked, 'Oh, so are they all good?' And I'm like, 'Is anybody all good?' So that's part of becoming dimensionalized characters. [The capacity for them to be bad is still very much out there], as it is - for better, for worse - for all of us.

So while the end of the blockbuster has Carol Danvers supporting a group that definitely deserves help, you shouldnt count out the possibility that we still could see some nefarious Skrull plots play out in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For example, there has been a lot of speculation about potentially one day seeing an adaptation of the 2008 comic book crossover arc Secret Invasion, and there is nothing in Captain Marvel that disrupts the idea of that happening one day. There is also the fact that the Fantastic Four will soon be a part of the franchise, thanks to the still-developing Disney-Fox merger, and that is a team that has done a whole lot of clashing with the Skrulls over the last 60 years (including fights with the Super-Skrull, who is a Skrull imbued with the powers of all the members of the Fantastic Four).

Of course, for right now the future of the Skrulls is as mysterious as any aspect of the developing Marvel Cinematic Universe, with everything happening past the release of Jon Watts Spider-Man: Far From Home this summer being maintained as a question mark. That being said, you can be sure that there will be fans globally excited to see more of the paranoia-inducing invaders, and its hard to imagine Marvel Studios only using them for this one blockbuster and then never utilizing them ever again.

For now, audiences everywhere can still enjoy the first ever big screen appearance of the Skrulls, as Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters worldwide starring not only the aforementioned Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, and Annette Bening, but also Samuel L. Jackson, Lashana Lynch, Clark Gregg, Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou, and Lee Pace. And be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend, as we still have plenty more coming from my sit down with Kevin Feige, discussing not only the new blockbuster, but also looking ahead to whats in the future of his franchise. So stay tuned!

There's A Rumor About Ryan Reynolds And Michael Bay's New Movie Actually Being A ThunderCats Film

There's A Rumor About Ryan Reynolds And Michael Bay's New Movie Actually Being A ThunderCats Film

A few months back, news broke that director Michael Bay and actor Ryan Reynolds were teaming up for a new movie, based on an idea from Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The co-production from Netflix and Skydance Media will be distributed by Netflix and have the streaming service's biggest budget to date. Original reports were that the film, titled Six Underground, would be an event-level action movie, but that specific plot details were being kept under wraps. Now a new rumor suggests that the 'under wraps' part may have been more literal, because underneath those wraps may lurk Mumm-Ra. Yes, the rumor is that Ryan Reynolds and Michael Bay's new film is actually a ThunderCats movie.

The rumor comes courtesy of IGN, and goes as follows. Six Underground is set to begin production this November in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. IGN's source is reportedly working closely with the production team, and alleges the reports film being a war movie and the Six Underground name are just cover to hide the fact that this is actually an adaptation of ThunderCats. That popular cartoon series that ran from 1985 to 1989, and has remained iconic. This is so far only a rumor at this point so don't go swinging around the Sword of Omens in excitement just yet. But if it proves true, it would be pretty exciting for fans of the property.

ThunderCats (along with Masters of the Universe) always seemed like it has untapped cinematic potential, especially in this day and age of nostalgia. It would definitely be a major surprise for a ThunderCats movie to be this far along without people knowing. But Michael Bay has been associated with the property in the past, and Netflix knows nostalgia better than most. Six Underground being a ThunderCats movie would also explain some of the secrecy, and justify the film's sizable budget. And to get real deep into the conspiracy theory weeds, Six Underground could refer to the six ThunderCats themselves, Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Wilykat, Wilykit and Tygra.

For those who aren't familiar with ThunderCats, it told the story of a group of catlike humanoid aliens who flee their dying homeworld and eventually settle on Third Earth. The ThunderCats are pursued to Third Earth by mutants who join up with an evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra in order to steal the Eye of Thundera from the heroes. In addition to the 80's series, there was also a short-lived series on Cartoon Network in 2011 and next year the ThunderCats will return to the channel with ThunderCats Roar.

If this rumor turns out to be true, I'm torn. Seeing ThunderCats get a big budget adaptation is awesome. But Michael Bay adapting another film based on a beloved cartoon series is causing some apprehension there. Still, having Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick involved is encouraging. Six Underground has also assembled a fun cast of potential ThunderCats, including Ryan Reynolds, Dave Franco, Adria Arjona, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Corey Hawkins, among others.

We'll keep you updated when we hear more about Six Underground and whether or not this rumor is true and the ThunderCats are actually getting a movie. In the meantime check out our premiere guide for all the movies coming to theaters the rest of this year.
