Jessica Chastain Has A Funny Theory About Her Dark Phoenix Characters Mysterious Past

The following contains minor spoilers for Dark Phoenix**.**

While Dark Phoenix may be mostly remembered for being the final entry in a long running franchise, the other reason it's a big movie is that it adds one of our best modern actors to the cast. Jessica Chastain makes her superhero movie debut in the film playing the film's apparent villain. However, while the identity of Chastain's character is quite mysterious, the actress has an interesting idea for her backstory.

At the beginning of Dark Phoenix Jessica Chastain's character is a normal human woman who, upon investigating what her dog is barking at, comes face to face with shapeshifting aliens. One of these aliens then takes the form of Chastain.

Our own Sean O'Connell spoke with Chastain recently and asked her if the actress had created any backstory for the human version of her character. It seems that Chastain herself and the character she was playing have a few things in common, leading the actress to consider that she was perhaps playing herself in Dark Phoenix. According to Chastain...

We were shooting that scene, I was meeting everybody and then the director, because I'm married to an Italian gentleman, very nice man, and he cast the guy who plays my husband in that scene as an Italian, he's an Italian. It was just funny. I mean, I look like Jessica. Maybe it's Jessica Chastain the actress.

We barely get to meet the fully human character played by Jessica Chastain. In my recollection, the character is named, and the name isn't Jessica, but who cares? Since the identity of the person isn't ultimately important to the story, it really can be anybody, and the idea that a shapeshifting space alien has taken the form of an Academy Award nominated actress is just funny.

The fact that the alien that now looks like an Oscar nominated actress then goes full Terminator destroying anything that gets in her way only improves the idea.

The fact that aliens play a part in Dark Phoenix seems to be a deliberate attempt to make this version of the popular Dark Phoenix Saga from Marvel Comics get over with fans better than what was done in X-Men: The Last Stand. While aliens haven't been important to the X-Men movies previously, they're key to the bonkers story that was created in the comics, though the new film certainly does still take some liberties.

Unfortunately, we'll never see the long term repercussions of Jessica Chastain being murdered by aliens as Dark Phoenix will be the last X-Men movie under the Fox banner. We expect to see the popular mutants completely rebooted at some point in the future into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Desire's Director Is Defending That Masturbation Scene After Some Netflix Users Complained

Netflix added an Argentinian movie called Desire or Desearas to its streaming service in the U.S. way back in December, but over the past few days there have been complaints on social media about a scene in the movie. The scene in question depicts young women (under the age of 10) playing around before one figures out how to have a climax with a pillow. People have complained the scene is child porn, but director Diego Kaplan has now explained why he feels the scene is not intended to be porn. He said:

Desire is a film. When we see a shark eating a woman on film, no one thinks the woman really died or that the shark was real. We work in a world of fiction; and, for me, before being a director comes being a father.

The movie kicks off with a scene where the two sisters are watching a cowboy movie on TV in their pajamas. Both sisters mimic the cowboy scene on TV by sitting on pillows and pretending their pillow is a horse, which one sister ends up using as a masturbation tool. They are clothed during this activity, but the one sister has a sexual awakening during the scene while her sister looks on, bewildered. Their mother is called in after the young girl is sitting in the fetal position. She thinks she's had a seizure and takes her to the hospital, but the adult Ofelia character later states that was the day she had her first orgasm and that it was a great life moment for her character, a feeling she's been seeking every single day since.

Created as an erotic fantasy film, Desire mostly follows two estranged adult sisters, Ofelia and Lucia, who come together for Lucia's wedding. Soon after, Ofelia begins coveting her sister's partner and begins feeling deep things inside, which is how the rest of the film ties into the opening scene. Still, some people on social media have begun complaining about the film and specifically its introductory scene, including posts such as the following:

One online blogger at PJ Media even put in a complaint to the FBI alleging the scene is child porn.

In his statement to Indiewire, Diego Kaplan also elaborated that the scene in question was not explained to the young ladies filming the scene and rather they were asked simply to copy the cowboy show. He said:

Of course this scene was filmed using a trick, which was that the girls were copying a cowboy scene from a film by John Ford. The girls never understood what they were doing, they were just copying what they were seeing on the screen. No adult interacted with the girls, other than the child acting coach. Everything was done under the careful surveillance of the girls' mothers. Because I knew this scene might cause some controversy at some point, there is "Making Of" footage of the filming of the entire scene. Everything works inside the spectators' heads, and how you think this scene was filmed will depend on your level of depravity.

The movie itself is definitely TV-MA, and there are plenty of nude moments, including a full-frontal shot of a dead man naked in a pool, and plenty of moments where women have their breasts out, while tanning on the beach or in the bedroom. The movie was released as Desearas: Al Hombre De Tu Hermana in Argentina back in 2017. It had been on Netflix for months prior to any complaints, and was still available streaming on Netflix at the time of this writing. Netflix has had other issues in the movies department, but we'll let you know if anything else happens with Desire as the story develops.

Rogue Ones Writer Defends Star Wars: The Last Jedi And Rian Johnson

Rian Johnson is still receiving a lot of flack from Star Wars fans for his decisions in Star Wars: The Last Jedi but another Star Wars writer is coming to his defense. Gary Whitta wrote the screenplay for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story but he is also now intimately familiar with The Last Jedi as he is writing the comic book adaptation of the film. Whitta admits that, had he written Episode VIII, he probably would have written a very different film, but he doesn't believe he would have written a better one. According to Whitta...

Look, I would not necessarily have made every choice that Rian made because I'm not the same person or writer or fan that he is, but I respect and admire and appreciate and support every choice he did make. The film he wrote is far braver and more mature and more challenging than I could ever have written.

There's little argument that the movie Rian Johnson wrote was brave. It certainly took the franchise to places it had never been before. However, for a vocal contingent of fans, the franchise went to places they didn't want it to go. Many took issue with Luke Skywalker's depiction in the story as a man who had exiled himself following a poor decision. Others didn't like the fact that characters like Supreme Leader Snoke were removed from the story without further explanation or that the question of Rey's parentage was given an explanation that some felt was a letdown.

Gary Whitta tells Jedi News that if he had written The Last Jedi he probably would have written a movie that better satiated those fans upset with Rian Johnson's story. But, at the same time, he says that his version would have been a lesser movie for that very reason. Clearly, he feels that the way The Last Jedi challenged the audience with something unexpected was its best aspect, as many people do, eventually.

It's certainly true that everybody is a little bit different and so everybody approaches Star Wars in a different way. It's one of the more interesting aspects of this new Star Wars trilogy, that each episode, from the story on up, is being handled by different people, so each one has seemingly complete freedom to craft whatever story they want to tell. Even Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Episode IX, while they share J.J. Abrams in common as a writer, have different co-writers attached, so it's possible all three episodes will be unique takes on the franchise.

As production on Star Wars Episode IX gets underway hopefully people can start to cut Rian Johnson a break and begin to focus on the final episode of the new trilogy, set to debut in 2019.
